Are Aussies Good With Cats?

by Karen on February 25, 2016

Our new foster cat will be staying with us for a bit over a week – so I thought we’d share our little secret to dealing with him. This story may sound familiar to you as we get asked this question frequently!

My fiancé and I adopted Kade from the RSPCA rescue shelter in October 2015. He is an 18-month-old brown tabby cat with green eyes. We love him to bits but he has a bit of a snobby personality.

One day when we arrived home from work, I walked in the front door to find Kade asleep in his favourite spot on the couch! I was super excited to see him, so I made him some food and he did his typical happy dance before I could even sit down.

I was thrilled, but he’s quite a snobby cat so I needed to do a little bit of talking. I sat on the floor and asked him what he’d been up to since I last saw him and he gave me a look that sd “why are you sitting on the floor?!” So, I got up and sat on the couch, with him between us. This was a tricky one as I didn’t want him to be jealous of the couch, but at the same time I didn’t want to show him up, or prove that I was the bigger person. But when he started to lay down I felt like it had gone well and it was all good between us.

When he went to sleep, I snuggled down next to him and fell asleep, but at some point, around 4am I woke up with a start. Kade was curled up next to me, making me think he was still snuggled up as I fell asleep. It was then that I realised he hadn’t moved. I could hear him breathing, but he was still curled up next to me. In a panic I started to think about what I could do in the middle of the night. So, I got up to find a flashlight, got the car keys and went and looked in his food bowl. There was one food pellet that wasn’t as shiny as the others. This was the food he’d been eating in the last few days, as he usually makes a fuss about his food in the morning. So, I went to go and feed him, he’d still have one last meal before I had to leave and I could still hear him breathing as I headed to the back door.

I put the flashlight in my pocket and went outside, to see a large dark shape. I slowly walked towards the shape, trying not to make a noise, but in the distance, Kade’s snores could be heard, and I knew he was up.

I found the food bowl. There was still one food pellet left, as it was slightly smaller than the rest of the pellets. The only way I could feed him was to try and force it down his throat, as my thumb and index finger couldn’t stretch around the size of the pellet. I couldn’t risk waking him up so, after a lot of pressure, I was able to get it into his mouth and then I had to move away fast, he’d wake up if I stood there for too long.

I found the flashlight and went back in, Kade was awake, sitting up, looking around the room.

“I heard someone outside.” He says, looking at me.

“You have company?” I ask, looking at him.

“I think so.” He says, “I could hear noises earlier, and now it’s quiet.”

“Stay in the room.” I tell him, “I need to check outside.”

“Why?” He asks, “What’s going on?”

“Just stay inside.” I tell him, “Stay in here until I call you.”

I left the room, went outside and looked around. I found the flashlight, the gun and a small knife. After checking the gun for ammunition, I put the knife in my pocket and continued to look around.

A little way up the street was a small house, just like ours. The curtns were drawn and I could see a light on inside. I tried to get closer, but the lights went out and when I moved the curtns to try and get a better look, I found it was actually just the porch light. I went back inside, and closed the door.

I went upstrs, looked in the bedroom and there was no one there. I went back to the room and looked under the bed. Nothing. I checked the closet, it was empty. I sat down at the desk and checked under the bed agn. Still nothing. The first thing I did was check his room. He had left the bedroom, only to find a door leading to an office. I went in and found a filing cabinet, a few papers and a set of strs leading down. I went back and checked the room under the strs, there was nothing.

I checked the bathroom and a spare room, no one.

I checked the kitchen and found no one there.

I went back to the office, checked in the filing cabinet, found it locked. I took a step back, kicked the desk and it hit the wall. I pulled back and kicked agn, it hit the filing cabinet.

I pulled back and kicked it agn, the filing cabinet fell over and the front door opened. I looked in, found one of his shoes and a bag that was open. Inside was a cellphone, a box of papers and a stack of pictures. I pulled them out, all pictures of the boy.

I put the pictures and his phone back in the bag, left the bag in his office and checked his clothes. They were still in his closet. I went back down and checked the car. The keys were still in the ignition. I threw the bag over my shoulder, walked to the top of the strs and listened. The boy was still in his bedroom. I went to the kitchen, found the key to the cabinet and unlocked it. Inside I found some cookies and a bottle of red wine. I took both and went to the bathroom. I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I washed my hands and looked in the mirror. I was exhausted. I went back in the kitchen and drank some wine, I looked at the pictures and the phone and took them to my room. I put the phone on my bedside table and fell asleep.

I woke up at five to the sound of people talking. I looked at the phone, saw a missed call from the boy. I looked at the clock, it was eight o'clock. I went back in the kitchen, took some cereal and put it in the microwave, I poured some wine and watched TV. I didn't hear the people talking, I heard nothing. I went to the phone and saw five missed calls. I called the boy back and told him that I was awake and eating. He picked up.

"Dad?" he sd.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm in here. How you doing?"

"Okay."

"Where's everyone else?"

"They're in the kitchen."

"Alright. Just relax, I'm coming down. Do you want anything?"
